Omar Zoboli, Oboe
Omar Zoboli was born in Modena, Italy. He completed his oboe studies under the tutelage of Sergio Possidoni, Heinz Holliger, and--for the Baroque instrument--Paul Dombrecht. Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Brüggen were influential in his development. He studied Philosophy at the University of Bologna. In 1978 he was awarded First Prizes at the International Music Competition in Ancona as well as the Italian Broadcasting Competition for Young Artists in Turin.
Omar Zoboli first captured wide attention primarily through his LP recordings—particularly of works by Pasculli, the “Paganini of the Oboe”. Since then he has strengthened his reputation as an exceptional musician through his worldwide concert performances with top-tier orchestras and at major festivals (Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Radio Lugano, Italian RAI Broadcasting, Pomeriggi Musicali and Verdi Mailand, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, and many more).
Besides his activities as a soloist, Omar Zoboli enthusiastically dedicates himself to chamber music, performing with various ensembles ranging from Baroque with period instruments, to Classical and Romantic, all the way to Contemporary Music and improvisation.
Composers such as Bussotti, Castiglioni, Glass, Gaudibert, Hoch, Lucchetti, Mosca, Möschinger, Pagliarani, and Possio have dedicated to him works that he has premiered. In 1982 he founded the Wind Octet Ottetto Classico Italiano, with whom he performed all throughout Europe.
Omar Zoboli has recorded a DVD (Lebrun-Konzert, conducted by Frans Bruggen), as well as numerous LPs and CDs of solo and chamber music literature from three centuries, for Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, Koch-Schwann, Claves, Divox, Accord, Stradivarious, Ex Libris, Jecklin, Pan Classics, among others.
As a solo oboist Omar Zoboli has played in the Radio Orchestra Napoli, in the Orchestra della Radio Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, in the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra, and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. On Baroque and Classical oboes he has performed in the Concentus Musicus of Vienna (Harnoncourt), in the Giardino Armonico (Antonini), the Scintilla Orchestra of Zurich, and with the Barocchisti (Fasolis), among others.
Since 1991 he has been conducting orchestras and large wind ensembles in performances of his own projects, with great success.
He regularly teaches master classes in England at the London Royal College and the Royal Academy of Music, in Spain, Germany, Sweden, Italy, in Switzerland, the Czech Republic, in South America, and China.
Since 1988 Omar Zoboli has held a professorship for Oboe (concert-level instruction) and Chamber Music at the Basel University of Music.
